This comes from Alessia Masella, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; she is a student in a recent Basic Online Course.
Before I began the Tribes TLC process I was a different teacher entirely. I went along with what other teachers have taught me and never really had my own teaching style. I would be the first one who tried to avoid situations that may cause havoc. If I saw something that would not work, I avoided it entirely. After reading the textbook and through the eight week online course, I can now say I am more open to the various opportunities that come from a classroom filled with such diverse characters. I still keep what other teachers have said in mind, but I am able to run the classroom on my own. The students are who I am expected to teach; they are the ones who need to grow. If we are teachers who hover, how will the students learn? The Tribes process is one that allows teachers to break out of their comfort zone and allow the students to feel in control. There are a number of activities that I learned to do with the students that helps them in gaining my trust and vice versa. With the Tribes process I am giving my students a voice and to me, that is the most rewarding.
