Miles Madison, Tribes Trainer and Literacy Coach/Mentoring Program Coordinator at the International School of Brussels, will be presenting two 90-minute workshops on Tribes at the European Council of International Schools Early Childhood Conference in Athens, Greece this month. The American Community School in Athens is hosting this conference from March 16-18, 2012 for over 200 participants from International Schools around the world.

Miles currently works in the Early Childhood Center at the International School of Brussels, where he has been instrumental in implementing the Tribes process and building Tribes Learning Communities throughout the school. The mission, goal, and philosophy of Tribes ideally fits with all missions and goals of international schools as it is particularly suited to the incredible multi-national diversity in most international schools. The increasing global mobility of families served by international schools requires that these schools themselves become and provide the stable sense of community that these families often lack. The Tribes process helps create this community.

The first session is an Introduction to the Tribes Process and the focus of this workshop is a brief introduction to Tribes Learning Communities and building Tribes within early childhood classes. Participants will learn about the developmental process of Tribes, study new patterns of interactions between teachers and students and between student peers, the profiles of resiliency in children and how to build it and the benefits of cooperation in learning environments. The role of the teacher in developing Tribes learning experiences will also be explored. This is meant as a general introduction to the Tribes process.

The second session is Tribes – A New Way of Working Together and the focus of this workshop is on the importance of social/emotional education within early childhood programs, in particular how the Tribes Process can be used effectively to incorporate social/emotional development within all areas of our programs. We will review the protective factors that build resiliency in young children and the stages of developing supportive learning communities. Participants will experience “hands-on” Tribes activities in order to build an understanding of the Tribes process. We will also explore how Tribes has been used effectively within an international school setting to address social and emotional learning objectives. Participants will leave with practical strategies for developing a community of learners that builds independence and collaborative skills.

Now, 35 years later, it is the ONLY book I still have and use. (As language teachers, we don’t use books anymore to teach languages – we tell stories) I have been a better teacher because of you. Your ideas and activities are as fresh and useful as the day I started using them. Tribes helped me design a way of teaching based on the student first and the material second. Your ideas are visonary. As I get ready now to hang up my cleats, I look back and realize that I must THANK YOU for all you have done for me and my thousands of students. What great, truly human, things you have shared with us in that book. It is so nice to be able to share this great news with you. Your book, its sparkling message of respect for others, has guided my career like no other. Hats off to you, Jeanne Gibbs!

I have been a Certified Tribes TLC® Trainer since 2002. In the last three years, I have been introduced to a three tier intervention system for behavior and academics; Positive Behavior Interventions Support (PBIS) and Response to Interventions (RtI). As I look at what Tribes implements and compare it to the framework of PBIS/RtI, I fully believe and endorse the Universal Tribes TLC® Process as the beginning point for any and all positive school change.

In the 24 years I have been in education, I have not come across a curriculum, process or framework that takes into consideration the “Whole Child Development” and then puts it into a training process that actually has educators experience Tribes Learning Communities.

Tribes starts at the beginning of all basic human needs by building an environment where all feel safe, valued and a have a sense of belonging. From there the Tribes TLC® Process builds in expected behaviors and then bridges over into best practices for teaching and learning.

Once the Tribes Process is implemented and developed, a school can train in and implement the PBIS/RtI framework to give deeper meaning to Tribes by going beyond the Universal practices into interventions for the students who need them both academically and behaviorally.

In summary, Tribes is a process that implements research based best practices for “Whole Child Development”; PBIS/RtI is the framework that drills deeper into making a school’s system, practices and data collection more effective.

Ten smiling students all standing in a line,

The Ministry of Education said, “Test them!” then there were nine.

Nine smiling students found teachers would not negotiate

One shouted “I have a voice too!” then there were eight.

Eight smiling students wanted school to be close to heaven

But when someone bullied them, they were left with seven.

Seven smiling students spoke up, even hits the bricks

One wearied of no change, then there were six.

Six smiling students tried verbal linguistic lessons to survive.

One was bodily kinesthetic, now there were five.

Five smiling students wished their learning styles addressed more.

Teachers said, ”That’s how I learned!” and we were down to four.

Four once eager students, discouraged as can be

Demanded to use technology… and then there were three.

Three lonely students, my rhyme is almost done

Just wanting more connection were soon down to one.

One Lambton Kent teacher, encouraged her superintendent true,

Brought Tribes to the board and then there were two.

Two earnest LK teachers, each talked to one more,

Extolled the value of Tribes Learning Communities and then there were four.

Four sincere LK teachers worked on introducing Tribes strategies late,

Listening, mutual respect, appreciation brought the number up to eight.

Eight dedicated Tribes trainers now, quite a decent team

Fought for all new teachers to learn this process and we soon had sixteen.

Sixteen earnest teachers, doubled six times more

Kids learned, listened and grew and schools filled to one thousand sixty-four.

The morale of this story is the Tribes process works for you

Don’t sit back and complain but learn what you can do!

Kids need caring teachers, safe places, Jeanne Gibbs’ philosophy

The Tribes process made my school a place where kids wanted to be.

Tribes for me has made my teaching life complete

Wish all kids could experience the chance to learn and grow like wheat!

Reaching All by Creating Tribes Learning Communities blends the fields of group process and cooperative learning; prevention and resiliency; learning theory and school change into a comprehensive, meaningful whole. This readable, useable, wonderful book is not just a set of activities to build community.

Jeanne and her colleagues incorporate the latest research on teaching and learning. They illustrate specifically how the Tribes process applies to a variety of school and organizational needs. Most importantly, they help the reader to feel hopeful and proud to be working and learning together with children and with each other.

Is your District or Board experiencing momentum with Tribes implementation?
Would you like to develop a cadre of Tribes trainers to create local expertise and capacity-building?
Would your school, district or Board like to be recognized for the hard work that you have done in the field of social emotional learning?
Would your district or Board like to receive one free registration (worth $1275) for a qualified TOT participant?

Then…. the time might be right for you to consider hosting a Tribes Training of Trainers during the summer of 2011!

CenterSource would like to identify TOT locations and dates in order to send out an announcement to our entire listserve before the holidays. If you are interested in hosting a TOT, we would need a bit of your time to help with some communication and logistics.

We would need –

a core group of 15 or so people from your area. We could then fill in with folks from other areas.

a room large enough for 36 people (up to 34 participants and 2 CenterSource Staff Trainers). The room will need to be large enough to move chairs around into community circle and various groupings, including 5 tribes. If you do not have a training room, we could use a large library, gym, cafeteria, or multi-purpose room. A classroom is usually too small for the TOT. Carpet is nice to dampen sound, but not necessary. It is best not to have tables for participants, but just chairs that can be moved into various configurations. We prefer to use a training room without a fee, of course, in order to help keep the registration fee at a reasonable cost.

a projection screen, power strip, 2 easels, chart paper, and possibly other audiovisual equipment. The CenterSource Staff Trainers bring their own data projectors and computers. We ship all books, materials, markers, and training supplies.

a reference to a reasonably-priced caterer, who CenterSource will work with and pay directly.

a reference to a reasonably-priced hotel for out-of-town folks. We try to negotiate a good room rate, but participants make and pay for their own reservations.

CenterSource will –

send out and collect all registrations, which are reviewed by our screening committee.

send out an announcement on our listserve and provide a flyer to you if you would like to forward it to people in your district.

have a discounted early-bird registration by March 30 as an incentive for people to register early. If the numbers are too low about a month or two before the TOT (i.e., if CenterSource cannot meet costs), then we would have to cancel, and people would have to switch to another TOT location.

If you are interested in hosting a TOT, we will need to hear from you by December 1st. Please let us know prior to that time if you need more information in order to consider this possibility. Below you can download the applicant criteria and TOT objectives, as well as an article on developing leaders. We look forward to working with your leadership team to help intensify and sustain the use of the Tribes process over many years!

Warm Regards,
